Sapporo Flamenco Workshop 2023: My Experience
On Sunday, June 25, 2023, the Sapporo flamenco workshop returned after three years.
The workshop was open to all levels. Whether we had been away from flamenco for a while because of life's circumstances or had performed in many live shows, there was something essential we all shared. I learned by watching Maestro Beni's expression right in front of me, the angles of his face, shoulders and toes, the light and shadow, and by listening to the singing and guitar, paying attention to it all. I learned to embrace and express the flamenco I deeply admire through a self that deserves care, rather than simply becoming a vehicle for desperately memorizing and reproducing choreography. It is not about showing off however I please, but about understanding Spain's culture and history and reflecting on the background of the lyrics.
It was a succession of moments so rich and intense that an hour felt like barely five minutes.
Close enough to almost touch, Maestro Beni's presence in person was overwhelming.
I want to treasure this experience and keep working hard, putting what I learned into practice.
