In 2019, Beni (Benito Garcia) provided flamenco instruction and choreography for internationally renowned hip-hop dancer KYOKA in the Red Bull TV project “Kyoka Step Out: a hip-hop dancer takes on flamenco.”
The project invited KYOKA to study three dance genres she had never experienced before through intensive training over a short period. Interviews explored her awareness of artistic expression and her approach to it through that process.
Her lessons with Beni lasted just three days. Even so, KYOKA fully embraced a way of using her body that was completely different from her usual practice, eagerly absorbed the essence of flamenco, and prepared for the final filming.
Filming took place at Alhambra, a Spanish restaurant in Tokyo reserved exclusively for the occasion, with live flamenco singing and guitar. Beni also joined in on cajón at short notice, and the performance was recorded in a special setting filled with the immediacy of live music.
Despite taking on a dance from another culture that differed greatly from her usual style, KYOKA delivered an accomplished flamenco performance with wonderful expression. We believe that achieving this result in such a short time was made possible by a special collaboration, bringing together KYOKA’s dedication and talent with Beni’s teaching and choreography.
We invite you to watch the video as well.
