8th Flamenco Masterclass: Tangos Rhythm and Groove
Our introductory flamenco masterclass with Beni reached its eighth edition. Once again, many students joined us.
This edition focused on flamenco tangos. We first got used to the rhythm while following Beni’s singing, then explored its groove through palmas, the rhythmic handclapping used in flamenco. Although the four-beat meter feels familiar to us, expressing that groove through the body is quite a challenge!
Once we felt more comfortable with the tangos rhythm, we moved straight into the choreography for the sung verse, known as the letra. Beni taught us many details, including how to use the upper body. We learned to value the groove even when the steps do not come right away, along with key points for dancing tangos.
Once again, the hour and a half flew by. With laughter along the way, it was a thoroughly enjoyable class.
