BG Master 5: Beginner Flamenco | 2023 Class Recap
The theme of this class was how to learn flamenco.
We become so focused on memorizing the choreography that we forget to learn how to convey the character and atmosphere needed when dancing flamenco! To address this approach to learning, Beni taught us in detail, through a sequence of marking movements, different ways to express ourselves: from breathing and gaze to arm movements and the movement of the hips.
Encouraged by Beni’s words, “It’s okay to get the choreography wrong! Express yourself!”, the students, although unsure at first, gradually began to understand how to dance with that character and atmosphere. They learned that it was not simply about performing a dance, but about understanding how flamenco is danced.
At the end, they also received advice on how to continue practicing. When Beni told them that he wanted them to incorporate what they had learned into their own dancing, the students nodded emphatically, and the class came to a close.
Once again, the 90 minutes of this open class flew by, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable lesson.
At the time, we were also really looking forward to the next class.
