BG Flamenco Children at El Día E at the Instituto Cervantes
Students from BG Flamenco’s children’s class performed at an earlier El Día E event at the Instituto Cervantes, recalled in the account as some six or seven years before, without giving the exact year. The learning they had built up from an early age remains a cherished memory of a meaningful stage experience.
In the format described in the account, El Día E was held annually at the Instituto Cervantes as one of the cultural events taking place at Cervantes centres around the world. Through music and dance, the event offered a glimpse of the rich diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Performances included flamenco, salsa, Spanish guitar and tango, among others, filling the venue with a lively festive atmosphere at each edition.
At that earlier El Día E event, recalled in the account as some six or seven years before, without giving the exact year, students from BG Flamenco’s children’s class at the time performed in the centre’s hall. Many children took part, ranging from young students who had started flamenco at age three and had been learning for only about a year to pupils in the sixth and final year of primary school. They all danced admirably before a large audience.
At the time, the children’s class took part not only in events at the Instituto Cervantes but also in festival parades and other stage performances. They certainly kept busy! I believe each of those experiences became an irreplaceable treasure, offering something that learning choreography in class alone cannot provide.
Learning flamenco is about more than learning to dance. It also means finding the courage to stand before an audience, sharing the joy of creating a performance with classmates and building up real experiences from an early age. I like to think those memories of the stage will stay with the children for a long time as they grow.
