La Verdad — A Night of Dancing by Your Own Light

The Truth of Flamenco

Once upon a time...

there was a teacher.

Over many years, that teacher came to understand

that teaching was not about moving one's feet

or marking the compás.

It was something much deeper.

It meant tenderly nurturing each person's heart

and guiding them until, one day, they could dance by their own light.

One October night,

a different kind of murmur filled the studio.

It was neither the sound of heels nor the resonance of the cajón,

but the tremor of breathing

and the sound of nervousness turning to light deep within the eyes.

The lights slowly dimmed,

and the first thing to speak was silence.

Then, one by one,

the students stepped onto the stage.

No one put on airs, no one competed;

they simply danced as their hearts led them.

In that moment, the teacher knew

that flamenco...

could shed tears of joy, too.

The teacher could not hear the audience's applause.

Only smiles echoed in the teacher's ears.

Smiles without artifice, sincere,

the kind that do not come from rehearsals.

Each smile

was a thank-you beyond words.

Each step

felt like a quiet confession.

When the last heel strike faded across the wooden floor,

a sweet sadness remained in the teacher's heart.

Like the hush when the sea has drawn back

and the shore is still shining.

The quiet happiness of having given everything,

after work held dear.

The students embraced and laughed,

and some shed tears for no reason.

Watching them, the teacher thought:

“This is it.

This is flamenco.

This is La Verdad.”

Truth is not something to dance,

but something to live.

That night, everyone was living it.

Without masks or fear,

with open hearts...

The teacher stayed alone

a little longer in the quiet studio.

The air still held the echo of palmas,

the scent of flowers, and the smell of effort.

The teacher closed their eyes and smiled.

Surely, deep within each heart,

that moment remains.

That single instant when everything was filled with compás,

with light,

with the body,

and with gratitude.

And while turning out the light,

the teacher whispered:

“If you ever lose your way,

remember this night.

This night when, without knowing it,

you were all duende.”
