This teaching engagement came about through filming a commercial for a hotel group. Beni taught flamenco to ballet dancers who represent the future of dance.
There were two classes: senior and junior! Both covered footwork, palmas (rhythmic handclapping), rhythm practice in 12-beat cycles, braceo (arm movements), and a simple choreography to finish.
The lesson took as its starting point the idea that ballet and flamenco share similar fundamentals of posture. The main focus was on developing that foundation into movements characteristic of flamenco.
Although the movements unfamiliar from ballet initially puzzled them, the students were impressively quick to reproduce them. Their response brought even more energy to Beni’s teaching. Each demonstration drew sighs of admiration and applause… The sparkle in the students’ eyes was especially memorable.
After the lesson, we were delighted to hear comments such as, “Now I want to try flamenco!” Through activities like this, we hope to introduce flamenco to many more people, encourage more people in Japan to take it up, and help it continue to flourish.
Thank you to all the students at Studio ARCHITANZ!
